MUNCIE — Volunteers in Muncie are gearing up for an annual tradition that brings Christmas cheer to families that might otherwise not have much to smile about come Christmas morning.

Secret Families is an organization that provides a decorated tree, presents for the entire family, a $50 gift card for Christmas dinner and a Bible to families in the community that otherwise would not have presents under the tree.

The group is aiming to help nearly 400 families this year.

On Dec. 1, 700 volunteers will shop for, wrap and deliver presents the presents.

Each of the families will receive $550 worth of gifts this year.

Chris Holdren and her family started the effort in 2004.

"Our parents wanted us to serve as children and grow up and serve as adults," Katie Holdren said. "I encourage anyone to get involved if possible."
