MUNCIE, Ind. -- A threat that caused increased security at Muncie Central High School Wednesday was not intended for any Indiana school, according to Muncie police.
The social media threat was directed towards students and staff at Madison Central High School in Kentucky, also known as MCHS.
The threat was passed on to school officials in Muncie Wednesday morning but was later identified as being directed toward the Kentucky school.
School officials are working with US Marshals to identify who sent a social media threat directed towards students and staff at Muncie Central High School.
The school system sent a message to parents before they realized the threat wasn't directed at them. Kentucky State Police have arrested the juvenile responsible for making the threat.
"Muncie Central takes any and all threats very seriously," said school officials. "Muncie Central officials were immediately in contact with the Muncie Police Department and the Delaware County Sheriff's Department."
The schools said that "all appropriate measures" were implemented to keep students and staff safe.
Muncie Police Chief Joe Winkle says they will continue to have increased presence at Muncie Central High School this week just as a precaution.
Muncie schools released the following statement Wednesday afternoon.
"At 1:45pm on November 29, Muncie Central officials were notified by the Delaware County Sheriffs Office that the social media threat from earlier today was NOT intended for Muncie Central. The Sheriffs Office confirmed that the threat was for a school outside of Indiana with the same initials, MCHS. The Sheriffs Office has also confirmed that the person responsible for the threat is in police custody. Muncie Central will return to our normal operating procedures for students and staff. We take any threat, no matter how big or small, seriously. We want to thank the Muncie Police Department and the Delaware County Sheriffs Office for their assistance. The safety and security of our students and staff is and always will be our top priority."
Anyone with information about any crime or threat should contact the Muncie Police Department.
