INDIANAPOLIS -- If you have a bad neck or back and you haven't heard of "beauty parlor stroke syndrome," then this is information you'll want.
Tanya Foster, owner of the "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" salons in Fishers in Carmel, has been a stylist for 30 years. She said she's familiar with the condition, but hasn't had a client with the issue.

Foster says she does take precautions, however, such as using tiltable shampoo bowls.
Foster's salons also use higher chairs that allow clients to lean back almost completely. They also added neck rests to every bowl so the client's head is flush against the opening.
"I do have a guest that has a bad neck," Foster said. "So we actually take her forward, we shampoo her head forward. We have it all planned when she comes in. I really pay attention to that, because if it is not comfortable for me, it can't be comfortable for the client.'
Foster says if you already have a bad back or neck, to let your stylist know. That way they can make accommodations for your comfort and safety.
