INDIANAPOLIS – A man was arrested after he plowed his van into a furniture store, struck a McDonald’s sign pole and fled the scene Sunday morning.

Police were called to 10th Street and Sherman Drive after a man was reported driving erratically in the area shortly before noon.

The man’s Gold Ford E 150 van left the road and hit the corner of Decor Furniture Store, near East 10th Street and North Bosart Avenue, and slammed into a McDonald’s sign pole.

The five occupants inside the van fled on foot, including the driver who grabbed a 6-year-old boy before running away.

Within minutes of the incident, the man and child was taken into custody. The child was unharmed, police said, and the driver is being investigated for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possible child endangerment.

No other injuries were reported and the building was stabilized by Indianapolis Fire Department’s Collapse Rescue team.

IFD’s Battalion Chief Barry Riddle said the building’s damage is estimated at $35,000.
