INDIANAPOLIS — Drivers in need of help are turning to RTV6 after waiting weeks for their license plates to arrive.

Steve and Joyce Belcher say they ordered new plates for two of their vehicles online January 22. It’s supposed to take 14 days, according to the Bureau of Motor Vehicle’s website, but the couple say they’ve already waited six weeks.

Joyce Belcher says they contacted the BMV and the post office and found out that their plates couldn’t be delivered because the mail deliverer can’t see the address on the envelope.

“He said they are not putting the address on the envelope properly, it slips down, and it can’t be delivered,” said Belcher. “He said, ‘Oh no, Joyce, there are hundreds out there that do not have their license plates yet.’”

The couple contacted the BMV again and were told they would re-send the plates, but Belcher is concerned that they still won’t be delivered if the same issue arises.

“She said, ‘do you want us to send it to your branch?’ I said, ‘I want it in my hands. Whatever you need to do, do it,” Belcher said.

A spokesperson for the USPS says they are not able to comment until they have looked into the situation on Monday. We will update this story when they provide their response.

The BMV said customers have the option, as well, to have their plates shipped to a local branch.
