OWEN COUNTY — An Indianapolis man drowned Saturday at a popular state recreation area southwest of the city.
The Department of Natural Resources identified the victim as 23-year-old Vicente Ramos Valencia. Witnesses said he waded into deep water in Mill Creek at Cataract Falls and then struggled before disappearing under the water.
A few minutes later, according to the DNR, a witness was able to find Valencia in seven feet of water and brought him to shore. An off-duty EMT and other bystanders performed CPR until first responders arrived, but Valencia died at the scene.
The Cataract Falls State Recreation area is about 50 miles from Indianapolis. The falls are the largest in Indiana, according to the DNR, and attract many visitors during the warm months.
