EATON, Ind. – Two brothers working as volunteers at a fire department expected to battle flames, but one night they were tasked with fighting a blaze at their own home.

The community in Eaton is helping the two men and their families get back on their feet since the fire destroyed all of their belongings.

"I'm thankful I'm still here. It could have been worse,” said volunteer firefighter Brett McBride, who was on the verge of falling asleep inside the home when it caught fire.

McBride was able to escape, call 911 and borrow a neighbor’s car to get his fire gear. He then returned to help fellow firefighters put out the fire.

Joe Baucom, McBride’s brother, said the incident was hard to put into words.

“My first concern was my family. It's going to hurt for a while,” said Baucom. “Until we get back on our feet I thank God every day I have my family.  We're going to do it together."

Once neighbors heard about the family’s loss, they began donating clothing, toiletries and furniture, among other items.

Baucom’s wife Rebecca said she appreciates all of the support from the community.

"I also volunteer at the Red Cross,” she said. “I've been at a fire house that family lost everything too. It is humbling to know I'm a wife of a fire fighter and on the Red Cross. It's a humbling  experience."

Those wishing to donate to the families can drop off items at the Eaton Fire Department.
