Elwood resident fighting to get pet pigs back, overturn ordinance to allow them as pets

ELWOOD, Ind. -- An Indiana town is getting into a fight -- over pigs.

Elwood currently bans pigs as pets, but one resident is demanding the town take action to overturn the ban and return her pets after they escaped.

Ashley Coots moved to Elwood in June. She says that her pigs had never escaped before, but 90lb Jojo made a run for it one day, and was picked up by the Elwood Animal Control officer.

Animal control told Elwood that according to city ordinances, she couldn't keep her pets. The ordinance states that no person shall have or keep any sheep, pig, goat, hog or swine within the city limits.

They also confiscated 120lb Kira.

Coots calls Kira and Jojo her 'babies,' "They are way better than dogs. They are very intelligent, compassionate and loving. I love them to death."

Coots said she reached out to Mayor Todd Jones with an ordinance adjustment that was crafted to allow potbellied pigs. The ordinance adjustment was tabled at Monday night's city council meeting.

The council will reconsider the ordinance amendment at their next meeting on October 3.
