Eminent domain proposed in Martindale-Brightwood library dispute

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- A debate is raging in Martindale-Brightwood about construction of a new library, and now the possibility of eminent domain is being thrown into the mix.

Unlike many suburban construction projects, the proposed library site at 25th Street and Sherman Drive would require tearing down existing structures, including four properties that don't want to sell.

Building owner Sheena Schmidt is one of the holdouts. She says she's fighting for her tenants.

"Where are these people going to go and get another place?" she said.

Tuesday night, those on both sides of the debate took their case to the Indianapolis City-County Council. The issue will be taken up Wednesday night in front of another group of city officials who will vote on whether eminent domain will be approved.
