MUNCIE, Ind. -- A smoke detector which had been tossed in a trash can led to the bomb squad being called out near Ball State University Thursday afternoon.
A suspicious package was found near Tillotson Avenue and Bethel Avenue around 1:30 p.m.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Department said that a suspicious package was found behind the Marathon gas station in the area.
Ball State University sent an alert out around 1:45 p.m. about "police action" in the area. No other information was given.

Bethel Avenue to Tillotson Avenue and Bethel Avenue from Community Drive were closed during the investigation.

Ball State alerted students via Twitter that there was no ongoing threat to campus around 4 p.m.
They confirmed that the suspicious device was a smoke detector that had been tossed into a trash can and was beeping.
