Fairmount boy, 2, dies after allegedly finding and firing a handgun

FAIRMOUNT — A 2-year-old Fairmount boy died Tuesday after he allegedly found a handgun in his home and the weapon discharged, striking the boy.

According to a report from the Grant County Coroner's Office, Fairmount police were called to a residence in the 1500 block of North Main Street at 12:13 p.m. Tuesday on report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a 2-year-old boy who was unresponsive.

Police and medical personnel began resuscitation efforts and the boy was taken to Marion General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the coroner's office said.

According to the coroner's office, the boy reportedly found a handgun in the residence and it discharged striking the boy.

The investigation remains ongoing.
