INDIANAPOLIS -- Loved ones were turning to each other Monday to cope with the loss of a father-to-be on the city's northwest side.
Last week, a house fire took the life of Steve Zuhlke. His pregnant wife managed to make it out alive.
The fire started in the early morning hours. Zuhlke and his wife Kat were the only ones inside.
According to fire investigators, Kat smelled smoke. She then, at 37-weeks pregnant, escaped through a window.
When firefighters arrived they found Zuhlke on the floor next to a couch. He later died at Eskenazi Hospital.
Zuhkle's friends remembered him as a generous person who was very much looking forward to the birth of his child.
"He was a go-to guy for a lot of things, you know, if you needed something he was there," said friend Jack Harmon. "He just loved his wife and he was really excited about the baby. It's just really, really tragic."
Funeral services for Zuhlke were scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Murat Shrine Center downtown.
