KOKOMO, Ind. – A 1-year-old survived a near death experience Monday after he fell into his family’s swimming pool in Kokomo.
Zachariah Moiriano fell into an above-ground pool in his backyard and was underwater for nearly 4 minutes.
His mother, Brittany Moiriano, said her children were playing in the yard with their grandmother present when she stepped away to grab snacks. She said moments later her mother-in-law yelled to call 911.
"By the time I got to the front door, she was already in the dining room area and I saw my son Zach in her arms,” said Brittany. “He had no color to him, absolutely nothing. He was just like a rag doll laying there and my whole world just froze. I dropped everything I had in my hand."
Zachariah was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo, and then airlifted to Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indy.
The child’s tests came back OK and he made a full recovery just days later.
“Honestly, with the pool situations - most of the time we have it locked up if the kids aren't swimming, but with anyone else with little kids just make sure that pools are gated. That the doors are closed or make sure the pools are covered up,” said Brittany. “It's such an important thing, such a scary thing. I never thought that it could be my child.”
