INDIANAPOLIS -- A father convicted of beating and killing his son was sentenced to 83 years in prison Friday.

Court documents reveal that 31-year-old Dennis Price was repeatedly punching and whipping his own 4-year-old son Derick Jones -- or DJ, as his family called him.

The attacks took place over the course of a couple days in Aug. 2014 at Price's house on the 900 block of 42nd Street.

The beatings left the boy with a broken rib and hemorrhaging in his right lung. The dad finally dialed 911 after DJ lost consciousness -- telling the police he believed the boy had overdosed on pain pills.

According to court documents, Price told police he gave the boy ibuprofen to reduce the swelling, then -- worried that he'd given him too much -- tried to make the boy vomit by having him drink a cup of water with a charcoal briquette in it.

The boy was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

A doctor at the hospital told police the boy had "multiple areas of blunt force trauma over his entire body," and he had blood in his stomach and chest and marks on his head.

An autopsy determined the boy died of blunt force trauma, and the boy's death was ruled a homicide.

Price was found guilty of murder last month, three days into his trial.
