FBI beefing up animal cruelty tracking

Posted

ANDERSON, Ind. -- The FBI wants to keep closer tabs on cases of animal cruelty.

Starting January 1, the agency says all police departments must report animal cruelty cases separate from other crimes.

Law enforcement officers hope the information will help them keep better tabs on offenders.

"There are some people who continue to move from place to place, and we're going to keep a closer check on these people," said Major Joey Cole, of the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

The information the FBI collects will begin being publicly available in 2017.
