INDIANAPOLIS -- A federal judge has ruled in favor of the NCAA in a lawsuit filed by athletes who claim they deserve minimum wage for playing college sports.
The court rejected the University of Pennsylvania students' claim that playing sports was equivalent to having work study. The students claimed that status required the school to pay them minimum wage under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The judge says there is precedent at the Supreme Court level, where the justices recognized a tradition of amateurism in college sports, that does not include pay for play.
