KOKOMO, Ind. -- Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz was a dedicated officer and a true friend, his fellow deputies said at his funeral Tuesday.

Members of the Howard County Sheriff's Departmentpainted Koontz as a co-worker who was totally committed to his job.

Another recalled a colleague who would go to bat for fellow officers:

"He was dedicated to the people he worked with. I can remember countless times that he would back me up on traffic stops, volunteer to take calls for me, and fell on the sword for many of us on several occasions."
