INDIANAPOLIS -- A mother dropped her three young children from a balcony to save them from an apartment fire Saturday night on Indianapolis' northwest side.
Crews from the Indianapolis Fire Department and Pike Township fire responded around 7:30 p.m. to the La Joya Apartments at 4514 Candletree Circle.
Flames were coming through the roof when they arrived on the scene.
The children - ages 9 months, 5 years and 3 years - were dropped by their mother from a second story balcony to a neighbor below. The kids were not hurt, but the their mom was slightly injured when she jumped herself.
Authorities say the fire started in the family's apartment when the children were taking a bath
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion.
The Red Cross is helping 16 families displaced by the fire.
The cause remains under investigation.
