INDIANAPOLIS — A fire forced an 87-year-old man out of the home he has lived in since 1953 on Thursday.
The fire on Thursday evening badly damaged the house on 35th Street, west of Crown Hill Cemetery.
Another person, who also lived in the residence, told investigators that he was heating a pot of grease on the stove when he decided to take a nap. When he woke up, the kitchen was on fire and flames were already into the ceiling. Fortunately, everyone made it out OK.
According to Rite Reith, Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief, the home did not have a working smoke alarm. Reith said to remember to never leave food unattended on the stove - especially grease.
