INDIANAPOLIS -- The son of an Indianapolis firefighter who died from cancer will be the first recipient of the Fire Ball scholarship.
The charity event was held in April to help support firefighters fighting cancer.
Dylan Johnston's father Joel Johnston was a 16-year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department. He died in October following an 8-month battle with cancer.
Johnston was announced Tueseday as the recipient of a $5,000 scholarship in his father's honor.
"We're overwhelmed by the generosity that our family has been shown throughout Joel's battle and since his death," said Dylan's mother Loran Johnston. "This is just another sign of the support that our family has received."
The money Dylan received will go toward his college education. He's set to attend IUPUI in the fall.
