INDIANAPOLIS -- The first mosquitoes of the season have tested positive for the West Nile virus, the Marion County Health Department said Monday.
No human cases of West Nile have been reported this year.
Marion County didn't report its first human case of West Nile in 2015 until September. Only one human case was reported in all of 2014 for the county.
The last death in Marion County from West Nile was reported in 2012.
The health department says most people who are infected by the virus do not develop any symptoms, although those who do can experience headaches, body aches, joint pains or rashes.
Mosquitoes are most prevalent around areas with standing water, especially in unused tires.
Anyone living in Marion County can dispose of unused tires for free on Saturday, June 11 during Tire Recycle Day, hosted by the Marion County Public Health Department in partnership with Meineke Car Care. Learn more about the tire disposal here.
