FISHERS, Ind. – Who knew a small town that sprang up near a railroad in the late 1870s would today become one of the best places to live in the country? Fishers, formally known as Fishers Station centuries ago, takes the 30th spot on Money magazine’s Best Places Live 2016 list.

With a population of more than 80,000, Fishers has seen tremendous growth over the last 20 years. This growth could be linked to the area’s small-town feel, housing and economic opportunities.

According to Money, homes in the area have a median sale price of $210, 935 and the average person will pay about $2,614 in property taxes.

The area, which was officially declared as an Indiana city in 2015, is home to several major employers like Navient, ADT, Roche Diagnostics, Freedom Mortgage, US Foods and Jarden Home Brands.

So what keeps people coming and staying in Fishers? There’s a little something for everyone.

History addicts will enjoy Conner Prairie, including its nationally acclaimed 1863 Civil war Journey; families can experience the sounds of the orchestra at Symphony on the Prairie; and shoppers and foodies will enjoy the abundance of restaurants and boutiques available.

If that wasn’t enough, more is in the works.

The Nickel Plate District, historically known as downtown Fishers, is undergoing a major redevelopment to include improved green spaces, luxury apartments, mixed-use retail, restaurant and office space, pocket parks and more. This plan falls under the city’s Downtown Master Plan.
