A Fishers teenager facing murder charges entered a guilty plea Thursday.

Maxwell Winkler is accused of killing an elderly man in Nov. 2014. The plea deal calls for him to serve 80 years for the man's death.

The teenager was 17 years old at the time of his arrest, but he is being prosecuted as an adult.

The 73-year-old man was shot three times and his throat was slashed when police found his body in Windermere Park.

Investigators say they uncovered disturbing letters after the crime – ones written by Winkler detailing how he planned to kill someone.

Winkler’s attorney tried filing for an insanity defense, but experts found him competent to stand trial.
