GARY — An investigation is underway after a 14-year-old high school student was found unresponsive at the bottom of a high school pool in northwest Indiana this week.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said officers rushed to Calumet New Tech High School in Gary to a report of a possible drowning.

First responders found freshman Curtis Walton unresponsive in the pool after going through a conditioning drill. Walton died due to the drowning.

RTV6's ABC affiliate in Chicago reports that witnesses say the pool was opened to players after football practice and at some point, the young athlete was discovered at the bottom of the pool.

School officials were not able to say if Walton knew how to swim.
