GATESVILLE, Ind. -- Hoosiers are setting out to pan for gold – and they aren't even leaving Indiana to do it.
At places like Salt Creek in Gatesville, Indiana, gold panning is taking off.
Jaw Clawson is among the prospecting hopefuls who travel to Brown County to search for gold in the waters of Salt Creek.
"Most people, once they find gold in the pan, that's really the decision point," Clawson said.
Gold isn't naturally occurring in Indiana – anything you find in Hoosier waters was carried here by glaciers from Canada. But, sometimes you can find what prospectors call a "picker" – a chunk big enough to pick up between your fingers without dropping it.
Clawson says he finds gold fairly often, but it only amounts to a few dollars in the end.
"It's really all about the bragging rights, and it's nice to play in the water when you're too old to go to the swimming pool," Clawson said.
