GREENFIELD — It was 1:30 a.m. on September 9, and Heather Fischer's vehicle was upside down and on fire following a two-car crash on U.S. 40 in Greenfield. She was trapped inside and the fire was getting worse.

Responding to the scene, Greenfield Police Officer Blake Crull was was able to pull the mother of two out of harm's way. She has badly injured, with a broken foot and crushed vertebra.

Three-months later, Fischer and Crull were reunited at a meeting of the Greenfield City Council where the 27-year-old officer received the police department's Medal of Valor. Fischer was in a wheelchair, still recovering from the accident, but doing much better.

The other vehicle in the crash was driven by Arturo Casimiro of Indianapolis. Hancock County court records show him charged with causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Arturo was also allegedly driving on a suspended license, following a previous conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
