LAFEYETTE, Ind. -- Griffith High School's boys basketball team went home without a win Wednesday – but they went home happy to be alive.

Their original matchup against Marion was scheduled for last weekend, but was postponed after the team landed upside down in their bus.

A driver reaching for her drink took her eyes off the road and sideswiped the bus – hurting 26 students and staff members onboard.

Principal Brian Orkis said he wasn't sure after the crash if the team would even play again until next season.

"Right off the onset I was wondering if we even had a team left," Orkis said. "But they wanted as a collective group to go out there on last time."

Despite their best efforts, Griffith lost to a buzzer beater from Marion.

Freshman boys basketball coach David Garrett, who was airlifted to the University of Chicago Hospital following the crash, was still recovering this week at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois.
