Groups promise continued push for LGBT rights

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two groups promised Tuesday to continue fighting for new civil rights protections for the LGBT community.

Representatives for Freedom Indiana and Indiana Competes argue more people understand the need to update the state's civil rights laws. They say the issue has come a long way in Indiana in the last three years.

They point to a growing number of people who are living in communities with human rights ordinances, including Kokomo, which approved an ordinance Monday night.

Members of Indiana Competes and Freedom Indiana say they'll continue to share with lawmakers the stories of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Hoosiers who have experienced discrimination.

The groups are pushing for full, statewide protections in housing, employment and public accommodations.

"The momentum is on our side of this issue," said Peter Hanscom, of Indiana Competes. "Public perception is on our side of this issue. And so, as we continue to move forward, we are in a place, we're in a position of strength locally, and it's our plan to continue to grow that support."

Last week, Senate President David Long said it's obvious a "lot more" discussion is needed before any change in state law.
