HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. -- Hamilton County, like most places in the country, has seen an increase in gun ownership among the public over the past few years. As a response to this, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is trying to promote responsible weapon ownership in a public forum Thursday evening.

Thursday night from 7-8 p.m. at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board and the sheriff's deputies will instruct the public on the best ways to increase safety around firearms.

The sheriff's office said it processed 63 more individual permits in 2015 than in 2014 - 433 to 370.

The forum won't be a hands-on instruction, but just a discussion of responsible ways to practice safe gun ownership.

There is no cost to attend, and free gun locks will be distributed while supplies last.
