$30 million Monon project in Carmel underway

Posted

CARMEL, Ind. -- The multi-million dollar project to expand the Monon Greenway in Carmel, Indiana is underway.

The $30 million project will expand the Monon to create more space for exercise, leisure and gathering.

Mayor Jim Brainard said he hopes to use the project to make Carmel a place where people want to visit. Plans include creating public areas, green spaces, public art, plazas with retail and living accommodations, and additional lanes for pedestrians and bicyclists.

"They are going to be brick roads that will last," Brainard said. "More expensive up front, but over time it's going to be great value for the community because they don't have to be repaved, easy to get to underground utilities. You can take them up and put them back down."

Officials hope to have the project wrapped up by the end of 2019.
