CARMEL — A 17-year-old Carmel student was arrested Tuesday afternoon for having a loaded handgun on school property.

According to Carmel Police, school resource officers received a tip that the juvenile had a gun on the grounds of the Carmel Learning Center, an alternative school across the street from Carmel High School.

Officers found the student and confiscated the gun.

The 17-year-old male was arrested and taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center.

Carmel Police say the suspect faces two felony charges: Possession of Firearms on School Property, along with Theft, Receiving Stolen Property.

There's also a misdemeanor charge of Carrying a Handgun Without a License.

"We would like to thank the person who quickly notified Carmel Clay School Administration and the swift action taken by school personnel," said Carmel Police Lt. Joe Bicke. "This solidifies the saying, “If you see something, say something”.
