Former Carmel swim coach gets 16 years for sex with girl he coached

INDIANAPOLIS — A former Carmel swimming coach is going to federal prison for 16-years.

30-year-old John Goelz admitted to having sex with one of the girls he coached.

"Today's sentence sends a strong message to those whom we put trust in to supervise and coach our children, that this behavior it illegal and those who take advantage of our children will face real consequences." said U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler.

Goelz coached at the Carmel Swim Club and was a volunteer coach for the Carmel High School swim team.

He was arrested last year on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and possession of child pornography.

Minkler said Goelz was involved sexually with the girl for more than nine months.

He would take her to his home, to parks and to a hotel in Anderson where he made a video of the two having sex.

Two video files and multiple still pictures were recovered by federal investigators.

"This is yet another example of a selfish and criminal act on the part of an individual who took advantage or a position of authority over a child," said Lieutenant Cameron Ellison of the Hamilton County Metro Child Exploitation Task Force.

In addition to his 16-years behind bars, Goelz must serve ten-years of supervised release once he is out of prison.
