FISHERS, Ind. -- A former ambulance driver is accused of stealing drugs from fire departments in five different Indiana counties.

Jason Howard, 41, is facing charges in multiple counties.

Indiana State Police began investigating the theft of drugs from the Greenwood City Fire Department on May 30 after an internal audit uncovered drugs missing.

During the course of their investigation, detectives found at least 34 vials fo Fentanyl that were taken from various fire departments in five counties, including Hancock County.

Indiana State Police say Howard was an employee for SEALS Ambulance Service during the thefts, which are believed to have began in early 2018.

Howard was arrested Monday on a warrant for possession of narcotics and theft in Hancock County. Prosecutors from each of the other four counties will review the information and additional charges may be filed at a later time.

SEALS Ambulance released the following statement Monday evening:

"Last month, Seals Ambulance’s internal audit and security procedures uncovered a possible drug diversion within its operations. Based upon internal investigation, the company identified the individual responsible. The individual is no longer an employee of Seals Ambulance, and we encouraged him to seek help for his addiction.

Opioid addiction is an epidemic across the country and has affected all levels of the health care industry. Seals Ambulance takes this issue very seriously and has extensive security measures in place to maintain proper control and access to narcotics.

Seals Ambulance identified the diversion through our security measures and took immediate action. Seals Ambulance is cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigations."
