Mother, grandmother raising money for metal detectors in Hamilton Co. schools

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. -- After Friday's shooting in Noblesville West Middle School, one mother says she's trying to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Marilyn Parrish, a Carmel mother of four and grandmother of 13, started a GoFundMe page to get a metal detector for every Hamilton County school.

"I had to go through a metal detector at Methodist Hospital - I have to go through a metal detector anywhere I go anymore," Parrish said.

Parrish said the metal detectors could serve as a deterrent -- she doesn't think they would need to be used for every student every day.

"If the kids knew that was a random search possibility, I think someone that was thinking about bringing a gun to school might rethink it," she said.

Parrish found metal detectors online for about $5,000, so she needs $320,000 for each Hamilton County school to have one.

But not everyone thinks schools are the place for such security measures.

"They're only as effective as they can practically be used," said Patricia Rettig, of Hamilton County Moms Demand Action. "My daughter goes to Fishers High School and to be able to afford just one metal detector there and run all those kids through every day - maybe not the best solution."

A spokesperson from Westfield Washington Schools said they encourage feedback and ideas from parents, and are evaluating any improvements to ensure student safety.

Noblesvile Schools says it's evaluating safety protocols after the shooting and will be working with law enforcement and school safety experts during that process.

Carmel Schools declined comment.
