GREENFIELD, Ind. -- Hundreds of people gathered in the city of Greenfield to say goodbye to a firefighter who died hours after battling a massive fire last week.

Lieutenant Scott Compton, 55, died Saturday just hours after a fire destroyed Mueller’s Auto Body and Glass and heavily damaged a nearby shopping center.

Compton was a 17-year veteran with the Greenfield Fire Department.

"To see the turnout to celebrate Scott's life. I think that's the one thing I'll take away more than anything from this," Corey Breese, Greenfield Firefighter.

A funeral service was held for Compton at Brandywine Community Church on Friday and dozens of cars were part of the procession that carried his body to Park Cemetery in Greenfield following the service.  Students and staff from Greenfield Central High School stood outside and paid their respects.

"They wanted to be there. It didn't matter that it was 40 degrees outside and windy. They wanted to take time out of their day and be supportive and show the respect that Lt. Compton deserves," said Jason Cary, Greenfield Central Principal.

The Greenfield Fire Department is selling memorial stickers for $5 each to raise money for Compton’s family. You can purchase them at the Greenfield Fire Headquarters at 17 West South Street.
