Indiana high schools offer students aviation training at a college level

Posted

GREENFIELD, Ind. -- The aviation industry has recognized a dire need for future pilots and several Indiana high schools are answering the call.

Mt. Vernon High School is one of eight schools offering a college aviation course to students. MVHS has collaborated with Ivy Tech Community College to implement the aviation course for juniors and seniors starting this school year. The course is offered for just $25 per credit hour, a significantly less than a college student would pay for the same course.

The year-round course is a combination of AVIT 111 and AVIT 120 college courses.

  • AVIT 111 is an overview of the aviation industry that allows students to experience the airport environment, listen to speakers from the aviation industry and learn about the types of career opportunities.
  • AVIT 120 teaches students the information they need to know in order to pass the Federal Aviation Administration’s pilot exam.

Mt. Vernon High School has opened up the course to upperclassmen at Greenfield Central High School. Students can travel to Mt. Vernon High School each morning to participate in the course.

Six students from Greenfield Central and five students from Mt. Vernon are taking the course for the 2018-19 school year. Program leaders hope to see those numbers increase to the maximum of 25 students over the next few years.
