NEW PALESTINE, Ind. — The New Palestine Police Department is raising money to add a K-9 officer to the department.

For the dog, training and equipment, it will cost the department $24,000. The department wants to use the K-9 for search warrants, searching for drugs and visiting schools for classroom lessons.

For the five-officer department, having a K-9 could also mean the officers have backup if another officer isn’t on patrol with them.

“They are not always available, they could be coming from the northeast part of our county which running lights and sirens is a good 25 minutes away,” Officer Tyler Batton said. “So the closest back up could be 20-25 minutes away, or if I could get this funding for this canine, he could be right over my shoulder."

The K-9 would be on-call 24/7 and able to respond to calls when needed.

If you would like to help the department purchase a K-9, you can donate on GoFundMe or contact them on their Facebook page.
