Veterans group gets wheels in motion for funding new VA transport van

GREENFIELD, Ind.-- Three to four times a week, volunteers donate their time to drive veterans from all over Hancock County to the Veterans Administration hospital in Indianapolis.

They pick up men and women from New Palestine and Fortville, to Greenfield and McCordsville. Many of them are disabled, unable to transport themselves.

Robert Workman, the Veterans Service Officer for Hancock County, says those who utilize the service are just a fraction of the 6,000 veterans currently living in the county.

Workman, a member of the Marine Corps who fought in Vietnam, connects his fellow veterans with services like transportation to the VA.

But soon, the van currently used to transport hundreds of veterans will need to be replaced.

Instead of scrambling to raise money for a new van, Workman says the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard, along with a number of other veterans groups are looking to collect $15,000 over the next six to eight months.

Once $15,000 is raised, the local Disabled American Veterans group will put up an additional $30,000 to pay for the rest of the new van.

Workman says this will all line up when they need to turn the van in, which will likely be early 2019.

When asked what would happen if there wasn't transportation to the VA, Workman says, "there would be 360 vets a year who couldn't get to the hospital."

The Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard is 501(3)c, so they are taking the lead in collecting the money.

If you're interested in helping with the effort to purchase a new van, checks can be made payable to the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard, or GVHG.

They can be mailed to: Greefield Veterans Honor Guard, 1104 Grayson Dr., Greenfield, IN 46140
