BROWNSBURG, Ind. -- Brownsburg police are mourning the loss of one of their K-9 officers after he escaped from his handler's yard and was struck by a car.
K-9 Darro somehow got out of his secured enclosure in the backyard of his handler's residence Wednesday evening and was hit by a vehicle at 56th Street and Northfield East Drive.
K-9 Darro died at the scene.
Police say the driver was not at fault for the accident.
An investigation is underway into how Darro managed to escape his yard.
The 4-year-old K-9 officer had been a member of the Brownsburg Police Department since September 2014.
