DANVILLE, Ind. -- The Town of Danville has a vulture problem and it has nothing to do with decorating for Halloween.
The Hendricks County community has received complaints from residents about vultures taking roost near their homes and parks.
Town Manager Gary Eakin says complaints include the smell and stench created by the birds and the inability for residents to go out and enjoy their backyards.
Eakin says over 100 birds tend to emerge in the late afternoon and early evening near the Park Ridge and Stratford subdivisions and Eakin Community Park.
The birds are a protected species under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so they can't be killed.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the birds avoid roosting near dead vultures.
Eakin says the town could purchase plastic, realistic vultures that look dead and hang them in the roosting areas. Pyrotechnics could also be used to scare them off.
However, Eakin says at this point no specific course of action has been determine.
They are gathering public opinion as to how to proceed.
