HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. -- A Hendricks County woman said a stolen rent check almost caused her to be evicted from her apartment.
Elizabeth McKee says she’s lived at the Bradford Park Apartments for three years and has always paid her rent on time.
She said she put her December rent check in the drop box on Saturday, just like she always has and went back to her apartment.
“When I get my social security check that’s the first thing I do,” said McKee. “I go get my rent check.”
It wasn’t until a couple of days letter when she got a late notice on her door that she knew it was gone.
When she went to the front office to tell them their mistake, management told McKee they never got her rent check and she would have until the 10th to pay her rent – and a late fee – or they could evict her.
“My birthday is Christmas day and I don’t want to have to move in the winter time,” said McKee.
After some digging, McKee found out she wasn’t the only victim. Management at Bradford Park Apartments said three other tenants had rent checks go missing after they put them in the dropbox.
After evaluating the circumstances, management at the apartment complex says they won’t be evicting the affected tenants – but they are still responsible for paying their December rent.
McKee says her bank still has no record of the money order being cashed – and because she’s on a fixed income, she’s still trying to figure out how she will pay her rent a second time.
“When people take from you they don’t know what damage they are doing,” said McKee.
Management says they aren’t sure how the checks could have been removed from the drop box – but tenants have the option to bring their checks in person. As long as they are received before 9 a.m. on the 3rd of each month there will not be any late fees.
