NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- A young veteran from Noblesville is getting a new lease on life.
Zach Nelson was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan in 2012.
But, a non-profit helped repay him Saturday by giving him a specially-designed house.
Family, neighbors, servicemen and women lined the street, cheering and waving as Corporal Zach Nelson and his wife pulled into the driveway of their new house.
All of it was made possible by Homes for Our Troops which builds mortgage-free, specially-adapted houses for veterans like Nelson.
"We have some 1,700 veterans that are rated by the Veterans Administration as severely wounded, which means they really require an Americans with Disabilities Act home so they can live safely," Gen. Dick Cody said.
Just two days before his 21st birthday, Zach was paralyzed from the chest down in a vehicle rollover while on a mission in Afghanistan.
Other members of his combat team also suffered injuries.
Now, Homes for Our Troops is helping Zach and his family move forward.
Everything in the house was built to accommodate Zach and eliminate obstacles he would face in other homes.
"We can't wait to move into our new home and are looking forward to all the independence Zach will have living here," his wife Kiley Nelson said.
"I feel indebted to them for what they have done for me," Zach Nelson said, "We can't say enough good things about Homes for Our Troops, this organization truly makes veterans their priority."
Right now, the non-profit has more than 50 homes in the works for vets nationwide.
