How Dallas shooting is affecting Indy police

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis police say they are hurting this week after five officers were killed by a sniper in Dallas, Texas.

"There is a lot of uncertainty about what could be next or the unknown," said IMPD Sgt. Dan Kistner, who works in the northwest district. "So officers, I think, are a little nervous. More than normal."

Kistner says he watched his own fears unfold Thursday night in Dallas.

"Something like this that occurred last night has been a fear of mine," he said. "There are a lot of unstable individuals out there. And they feel like, as opposed to participating in peaceful demonstrations, that they will carry out an act like they did last night."

The death of five officers struck a personal note, bringing back memories of colleagues Kistner has lost.

"So it kind of brings those raw emotions back a little bit," he said. "And it brings back the reality of how dangerous and how unforgiving this job can be."

Nevertheless, just like all the days before, Kistner said he and his colleagues would don their uniforms and do their jobs.

"The reality of it is, what we are out here doing is the same thing we will be doing today, and the same thing we will be doing next week," he said.

Kistner has been with IMPD for 14 years. You can see an extended interview between him and RTV6 reporter Melissa Mahadeo below:
