Wednesday is National Heimlich Maneuver Day.
Hopefully you never need to use it, but just in case, here's a tutorial on the instructions that may save a friend or family member's life.
First, ask to see if the person is choking. If they can speak, the Heimlich Maneuver isn't necessary.
If they are choking, place one fist just above the belly button with your thumb facing the victim's stomach.
Then, grab your fist tightly with your other hand.
Make quick, upward thrusts with your fist. You may have to try several times before the foreign object is dislodged.
Make sure you call 911 if the maneuver isn't working.
You never know when the knowledge could come in handy. The creator of the maneuver, Henry Heimlich, used it for the first time at the age of 96.
