Kokomo students organize alternative prom after high school develops strict attendance policy

KOKOMO, Ind. – Soon after non-traditional students in Kokomo learned they weren’t allowed to attend prom at their area high school, they began planning their own.

Braxton Nickles, who attends an alternative education program called Twilight, said she would rather go Kokomo High School’s prom, where many of her friends attend.

“I had already bought my dress and stuff along with a lot of other people,” said Nickles.

As she still attends some classes at Kokomo High School, she said she was shocked when she learned Twilight students wouldn’t be allowed to attend the event as in years past. She started a petition that gained more than 800 signatures, but school officials didn’t completely change their minds.

Following the petition, the district clarified their stance saying Nickles could attend, but only as a guest of a traditional student from Kokomo High School. They also said admission depended upon age and academic performance.

Nickles said it made her feel like a second-class citizen.

"We're kids. We're all the same and none of us should be treated less than the other,” she said.

With the rules in place, Nickles and her friends from Twilight planned an alternative prom that will be held Nov. 18 at the Bel Air event center.

Business owner Ty Gray helped students with fundraising and planning.

“I think this is a community event and I'm very proud of Braxton for standing up,” said Gray.

Nickles said her goal is inclusion.

“We aren't alone anymore,” she said. “A lot of people are standing up and helping us."
