KOKOMO, Ind. -- Eleven people were injured during a hazmat incident in Kokomo Tuesday night.
Officers with the Kokomo Police Department said the drug task force was executing a search warrant in the 1800 block of N. Wabash Street in reference to suspected drug activity around 8 p.m.
Once inside the home, officers were exposed to an unknown chemical agent, causing eight officers to be transported to St. Vincent hospital in Kokomo. One additional officer was also treated.
Call 6 Investigates said all officers were alert and walking at the hospital.
Two adults inside the home were transported to Community Howard Hospital after being exposed to the agent.
One juvenile was also treated and detained. Six other suspects were taken into custody at the Howard County Detention Center.
Reilley Cessna, who lives just a short distance away, told RTV6 she saw ambulances taking patients away from the scene.
Brian Seldon, Kokomo Police Department Major, said the scene was not related to a chemical explosion as rumored on social media.
“There has not been any chemical explosion at the scene,” said Sheldon. “We want to make it safe and we want to let citizens know if they suspect any drug activity in and around their neighborhood, call the Kokomo Police Department and we’re going to investigate.”
