MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Sheriff's deputies in northern Indiana responded to a report of possible homemade fireworks Monday only to discover an IED.
LaPorte County deputies were called to the 600 block of Longwood Drive just outside of Michigan City, Indiana, around 1:45 p.m.
A resident had been cleaning trash and litter from a ditch when she found what she believed to be a homemade firework.
Deputies arrived quickly called the Porter County Sheriff's Bomb Squad after determining the object was an improvised explosive device (IED).
The device consisted of two mason jars containing a flammable liquid and a pipe bomb. The jars were connected together by a fuse.
Bomb squad officers were able to move the device to a nearby field, where it was detonated safely.
Investigators said they able to collect enough remnants of the device to potentially determine who constructed it.
