INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Fire Department's new downtown headquarters opened its doors for a walkthrough Monday.
The brand new, 20,000-square-foot structure is located at 900 Fort Wayne Avenue. Among many new features is an encapsulated room for storing firefighting clothing that vents contaminants to the outside.
The building also has comfortable living space for 11 firefighters, as well as a separate room to conduct critical fire operations.
The department hopes to consolidate six different divisions under one roof next spring at the Red Cross building located next door.
