INDIANAPOLIS -- A man choked a police officer during an arrest attempt outside a Dollar General Tuesday afternoon, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the second time he has allegedly assaulted an officer this year.
IMPD officers were called to the Dollar General in the 2100 block of N. Mitthoeffer Road around 3 p.m. for a report of a man who was drinking alcohol in the store and then stole a phone charging cable.
An officer located the suspect, Donald Brown, 55, in the parking lot of the store. When the officer tried to take him into custody, Brown began choking the officer.
Brown and the officer fell to the ground in the struggle. Two additional officers arrived on the scene and one of those officers used a Taser on Brown to stop the assault. The three officers were able to handcuff Brown and take him into custody.
Brown told the IMPD officers that he was trying to choke the officer like he did last time he fought with the police.
One officer was treated for a minor knee injury he sustained during the struggle.
Brown is charged with strangulation, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and theft.
He was already under house arrest. Brown was convicted of assaulting an IMPD officer in February 2016.
