INDIANAPOLIS -- The fatal shootings of two black men by police in Minnesota and Louisiana prompted a strong response from Indiana Congressman Andre Carson, who pushed Thursday for a victim's bill of rights at a Thursday news conference.
Carson, a Democrat, joined other members of the Congressional Black Caucus to talk about the shootings in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Saint Paul, Minnesota, that killed Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.
The group proposed a bill of rights for those shot and killed by police, including the right to an independent investigation and an independent autopsy.
Carson says he can relate to the pain and outrage of so many people who feel they're unfairly targeted by police.
He also said the American people are losing their faith that officers who cross the line will be held accountable.
Carson said leaders need to give more support to community policing. He says he hopes communities across America will honor Sterling and Castile by making sure everyone is equally protected under the law.
